About

Our Story

Founded in 2016 by classical pianist Hunter Noack, IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild™ is the outdoor concert series where America’s most stunning landscapes replace the traditional concert hall. A 1912 Steinway Model D concert grand piano travels on a flatbed trailer to awe-inspiring natural landscapes across the West, from national parks to urban oases.

Guests are encouraged to wander and explore the surrounding environment while listening to the music through wireless headphones, creating an immersive experience that fosters a connection with the music, nature, and with one another.

Now in our 11th season, we have presented 355 concerts featuring 100 guest artists for 95,000 people, many of whom experienced live classical music for the first time. Inspired by Hunter’s passions, the organization’s mission is to create experiences that connect audiences to classical music and to the great outdoors, and has inspired several artists and organizations to bring their own music experiences into nature.

In the spirit of the Works Progress Administration’s (WPA) Federal Music and Theatre Projects, which presented thousands of free concerts and plays in theaters, public spaces, and parks across the country during the Great Depression,
IN A LANDSCAPE events are also offered in rural communities for free or on a subsidized basis. Over $100,000 in
free tickets are given away each year.

Hunter Noack

Pianist

Topping the classical music Billboard charts with his debut album, pianist Hunter Noack is an avid outdoorsman and the founder of IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild™.  CBS Mornings created a segment about Hunter in their series, “A More Perfect Union,” he has been featured on  the front page of The Oregonian newspaper, and he has brought his piano series to  iconic landscapes like Yosemite, Joshua Tree, and Crater Lake National Parks.

Beyond IN A LANDSCAPE, Hunter collaborates with numerous artists outside the classical realm. He has worked with  dance companies (Oregon Ballet Theater, NW Dance Project, Kaatsbaan), performed around the world with Pink Martini at Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Royal Albert Hall among others, and has appeared with his partner Thomas Lauderdale with the National Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Oregon Symphony.

Hunter grew up kayaking, fishing, and playing piano in Central Oregon. At 14, he left to study at Interlochen Arts Academy (with Stephen Perry and Yoshi Nagai). He went onto San Francisco Conservatory of Music (with Yoshi Nagai) and earned degrees from University of Southern California (B.M. with John Perry) and Guildhall School of Music and Drama (M.A. with Paul Roberts and Ronan O’Hora). Hunter returned to his home state in 2015, where he  currently lives along the Clackamas River in Eagle Creek, Oregon.
